The Naloxone Project Statement on the new FDA approval of  Over the Counter Naloxone

  • The Naloxone Project (TNP) supports any process that increases availability/access to naloxone in the community at the moment of need

  • OTC availability does not change TNP’s Mission and 6 Principles of Change

  • To reiterate, this is as much about creating a connection (patient and health system/provider) as it is about the compound

  • The barrier to patient financial burden still exists, and potentially worse, private and government carriers may drop coverage for an OTC drug

  • With referral to pharmacy to “pick some up”, the fill rate will likely remain dismal at <2-5%

  • Stigma is a powerful force that prevents care for patients with opioid use disorder and those at risk of overdose. Naloxone saves lives, not only through its actions to reverse an opioid overdose, but also through its effect of decreasing stigma. Naloxone is a symbol of care and sends a message that fosters further treatment and recovery.
